About Ryoko
Ah Ryoko, the cause of trouble and comic relief around the Masaki household. Wild, unpredictable and equipped with a helluva temper, Ryoko added just the right amount of life to Tenchi's life, alongside the other girls. Before she made her residence on Earth with Tenchi a permanent dwelling, Ryoko had made quite a name for herself amongst the galaxies as one of the most notorious space pirates to ever roam the star system. Seven-hundred years prior to the events of Tenchi Muyo! Ryoko waged a battle with the Juraian prince Yosho, and sadly lost, which lead him to imprison the renegade space pirate inside a cave. That is, until centuries later when Yosho's grandson Tenchi accidentally awoken the sleeping beauty and caused a whole lotta drama sequences to set in place (as in drawing two Juraian princesses and a spacey Galaxy Police officer to Earth. And of course Ryoko's mother-dearest wasn't far behind the fray).
Like most of us, Ryoko thoroughly enjoys having a good time, even more so if that good time includes drinking alcohol, particularly sake. Ryoko has been known to go on benders several times a week, usually waking up on the crossbeams that are above the Masaki household's living with a terrible hangover and very cranky. But she never learns her lesson, as she continues to drink despite the poor reprocussions. She's very lazy, and its far from unusual to find her napping on the roof or on the crossbeams while everyone else is working. However, on a few rare occasions she has been seen actually contributing to the chores, frequently if it means it will please Tenchi.
Ryoko has a mean jealous streak, and when she feels that someone else is intruding on "her" Tenchi Ryoko is absolutely ready to fight for her man. Sometimes, even when the interaction is innocent, when Tenchi pays any kind of kindness to anyone of the female persuassion, Ryoko has been known to become an emotional wreck, whether the dominate emotion is all-out rage or bursting into tears, Ryoko's emotional outbursts are always a performance everyone within the sound of her voice is forced to engage in.
It's been speculated that, due to her seven-hundred year imprisonment, Ryoko is not a slave to social norms, such as dabbling in public drunkeness, blurting out inappropriate thoughts, and lazing around the Masaki household instead of contributing more thoroughly to the chores every resident participates in. She's quick to jump into a fight, even if it's at the cost of her surroundings, such as some of the Masaki house or the surrounding property being destroyed. Usually these battles are commenced with Ayeka, as each young lady is head-over-heels in love with Tenchi, thus are romantic rivals. She has a brutal temper, and when rubbed the wrong way Ryoko isn't above becoming beligerent and screaming her head off at any nearest person. She doesn't take abuse or crap from anyone, and she'll damn well let you know. However, this does not mean that she is totally incapable of getting along with most of the Masaki residences about ninety-percent of the time. She's pretty nice to Sasami, Ayeka's younger sister, and doesn't really bother Tenchi's father and grandfather (unless his father is acting like a less-than-perfect gentleman), and although she can be short with Mihoshi (like most of the residences), she doesn't seem to harbor any ill feelings towards her, despite that she was sent to Earth to retrieve both her and her ship/cabbit Ryo-Ohki. When she's not butting heads with Ayeka she tends to get into yelling matches with Washu, her mother. Washu seems to annoy Ryoko, even if some of Washu's stunts do not directly harm Ryoko or Tenchi directly. She seems to be overly critical of her mother, usually acting as if she were some deranged mad scientist (Washu isn't deranged, but as to the "mad" and "scientist" parts I find those to be pretty apt descriptions). No matter what, I think the two have a love-hate relationship: they love hating each other when the subject at hand is nothing major, but if something bad would happen to one the other would instantly become concerned. It's complicated, but most mother and daughter relationships typically are.
As for Tenchi, their relationship is a series of ups and downs. Ryoko seems to have picked up the bad habit of unintentionally causing trouble for him and his family, yet Tenchi never seems to be able to harbor a grudge against her. Whenever an epic battle is taking place by some malevolent force from beyond the galaxy, Tenchi and Ryoko are frequently paired up, helping and supporting one another, even grieving if one gets hurts or is in danger, no matter what. And, if I may get all fangirly on you, there's been quite a library of physical hints towards the relationship of Ryoko and Tenchi being more than just "good friends". Ryoko obviously wears her affection for Tenchi on her sleeve, but Tenchi is pretty dense when it comes to romantic feelings and girls. While there isn't hard physical evidence, and I don't think there ever will be, the bond between Tenchi and Ryoko is absolutely different from his relationship with the other women in his life (excluding Sakuya, but that's a separate story). They've held each other, gone on what is typically considered dates, they've spent countless hours worrying and fretting over one another, and they've saved one another time after time. Who knows where this relationship is technically going, but as fans we have the liberty to pick and choose how we interpret certain pieces of evidence found in both the anime and manga and take that as gold.
In addition to creating Ryoko, Washu also created Ryo-Ohki, Ryoko's cabbit and spaceship. Now, some of you may be scratching your head, wondering what on earth is a cabbit and how does it relate to a spaceship. That's okay, because the situation is a little odd. You see, a cabbit is a cross between a cat and a rabbit, producing a small furry creature with the ears of a rabbit but the body (excluding the fuzzy rabbit tail) of a cat. Another similarities shared with cats is that cabbits meow, and an additional similarity shared with rabbits is that cabbits love carrots. Ryo-Ohki has a unique ability to transform into a fair-sized battle equipped spaceship, which is what Ryoko used to cause havoc in the galaxy during her space pirate days. Although those days are long gone, Ryo-Ohki still comes in handy when it comes to traveling across space and fighting against enemy ships who threaten the Masaki household. In addition to transforming into a spaceship, Ryo-Ohki can also take on the physical characteristics of a young girl at about the age of four or five, carrying over her large ears, long and oddly colored brown and white hair, her yellow eyes, and the fur that encompasses her body. Since both were created by Washu, Ryo-Ohki and Ryoko are considered sisters, so says Ryoko in the OVA.
